The latest edition of <i>World Trademark Review</i> presents analysis of this year’s Global Trademark Benchmarking Survey. While there are a number of positives to take away from the findings, corporate awareness of trademarks remains a problem for many in-house teams.

The trailblazing corporate trademark teams revealed in awards shortlist

Almost 1,500 nominations and two months of extensive research later, the shortlist for this year's WTR Industry Awards can now be revealed. The awards recognise the vital work of in-house trademark counsel and identify those teams and individuals that are performing their functions to the highest standards. The winners will be announced next month at an exclusive reception in Washington DC.

Call for application fee refunds for unnecessary defensive gTLD applications

A number of submissions to ICANN’s public comment on the perceived need for defensive gTLD applications have called for a system that allows applicants to subsequently withdraw from the process if it transpires that a defensive registration is not necessary.

ACTA referred to ECJ in bid to dispel concern (updated)

With the number of countries reviewing their position on the Anti-counterfeiting Trade Agreement rising, the agreement is to be referred to the Court of Justice of the European Union in order to assess whether it is compatible with the European Union’s fundamental rights and freedoms. Rather than resulting from concern, the move is intended to fight back against what one commissioner terms “misinformation” and “rumour”.
