Trademarks in Ireland are governed by the Trademarks Act 1996 and the Trademarks Rules 1996. The act modernised Irish trademark legislation, bringing Ireland into line with its obligations under EU law. The provisions of the act meet the requirements of the EU First Trademarks Directive (89/104/EEC).
