The protection of designs is governed by the Design Act, which provides sui generis rights for designs registered through substantive examination by the Japan Patent Office (JPO). Unregistered designs may be protected under the Unfair Competition Prevention Act under certain conditions. Additionally, copyright protection under the Copyright Act is available for the protection of applied arts in limited circumstances.
