The trademark registration system in Malaysia is governed by the Trademarks Act 1976 and the Trademarks Regulations 1997. Malaysia acceded to the Paris Convention for the Protection of Intellectual Property on January 1 1989. In 1994 Malaysia signed the Agreement on Trade-Related Aspects of Intellectual Property Rights (TRIPs); since then Malaysia has reviewed its domestic IP laws and amended them in order to comply with the various requirements and obligations under the TRIPs Agreement.
