Trademark registrations up, designs down as the Japan Patent Office reveals the top registrants for 2016

The Japan Patent Office received its highest number of trademark applications in 10 years during 2016, according to the agency’s latest annual report. Of the top 10 registrants last year, nine were Japanese entities (the exception being South Korea’s LG Electronics).

Top trademark and design registrants in Japan revealed

The most recent edition of the JPO’s annual Status Report indicates that 2015 was a bumper year for trademark filings in Japan. The JPO received 147,283 applications during the year, representing a year-on-year increase of 18.4%. Trademark registrations themselves, on the other hand, were slightly down, from 99,896 in 2014 to 98,085 in 2015.

Korea’s new ‘dominance’ in global design filings is almost entirely accounted for by single applicant (you know who)

The World Intellectual Property Organisation recently released annual data for industrial design filings under the Hague System; this is the first year in which Japan and the United States, and the second year in which South Korea, have been members of the scheme. All three countries now appear to be major players when it comes to design rights, as Korean press reports suggest – but a closer analysis of the statistics tells a different story.

MITSUBISHI decision brings hopes to owners of well-known marks

The Pabedan Township Court has ruled in favour of Mitsubishi Electric Corporation in a trademark infringement case against an importer and distributor of infringing breakers bearing the mark MITSUBISHI. Among other things, the court held that the famous character of the MITSUBISHI mark could not be “unremembered or unknown to the defendant”.
