Designs can be protected in the United Kingdom by unregistered design rights and UK registered designs. Statutes relevant to design rights in the United Kingdom include the Copyright, Designs and Patents Act 1988 and the Design Right Rules. Statutes relevant to UK registered designs include: • the Registered Designs Act 1949 (as amended by the Copyright, Designs and Patents Act); • the Registered Designs Rules; • statutory instruments; and • the EU Designs Directive (98/71/EC), which harmonises registered design law within the European Union.
