Natural American Spirit deal suggests less than gloomy tobacco brand valuations

Japan Tobacco Inc has announced plans to buy the overseas rights to the Natural American Spirit brand name and associated trademarks in a $5 billion cash deal. The price seems high but could be an indication that tobacco brands with a strong presence in countries where the risks of plain packaging are relatively low can now be valued at something of a premium.
