Karin is a partner in the Trademark and Copyright Practice Group at Leason Ellis, where she focuses on providing high level guidance to clients large and small across a wide range of industries. Combining a litigation background with years of experience before the Trademark Office, Karin offers sensible strategies for growing and protecting brands for businesses in fashion, publishing, education, consumer products, technology, finance and more in the U.S. and worldwide. Career highlights include obtaining trademark protection for recognizable bottle designs, handbags, and shoe ornaments, acquiring rights from a defunct company so a client could jump ahead in a hotly contested priority battle, relying on unregistered use rights to recover a domain name, and counselling on global co-existence arrangements, complex licenses and due diligence transactions.
Her enthusiasm for trademark law transcends the daily practice with outside activities such as regularly contributing articles for World Trademark Review and teaching a self-designed course on trademark practice as an adjunct professor at Pace Law School, where students consistently review her class as “fun.” She has served on committees for INTA and the NY State Bar Association and is also a member of ECTA, the European Community Trademark Association. Karin earned her JD summa cum laude from Brooklyn Law School and a BA cum laude from Williams College.
