ANA warns that ICANN decision-making could be reduced to political logrolling

The Association of National Advertisers has warned of the dangers behind plans to enhance the GAC’s role in ICANN decision-making, arguing that the move would weaken the multi-stakeholder model and – absent transparent procedural safeguards – could see governments make concessions on internet governance decisions in a bid to receive political favours elsewhere.

Problem of brands funding illicit websites persists

The UK’s Police Intellectual Property Crime Unit (PIPCU) has launched its Infringing Website List (IWL), which is designed to provide the digital advertising sector with an up-to-date list of copyright infringing sites that they should avoid placing advertising on. The initiative follows other recent efforts to disrupt advertising on websites that infringe copyright and trademark rights, and trademark counsel have a critical role to play in such initiatives.

ICANN goes head to head with registrar group over proposed new RAA

ICANN's negotiations with the Registrar Stakeholder Group Negotiating Team over amendments to its Registrar Accreditation Agreement seem to have turned into a battle of wills. While the discussions started in 2011, the issue has gained momentum as ICANN wants to oblige all registrars wishing to sell new gTLDs to sign up to the 2013 RAA. With the first registry agreements for new gTLD applicants likely to be signed soon, this clash could threaten to delay the launch of the new gTLDs.

The Association of National Advertisers (ANA) has proposed that a temporary ‘do not sell’ list of brands be implemented during the first round of gTLD applications, giving ICANN just two days to respond.

Senate feels time is up to effect gTLD change, as CADNA urges a policy focus

Opponents to ICANN’s rollout of new gTLDs were given another opportunity to air their concerns at government level yesterday, but US senators suggest that the time to effect substantive changes to the programme has passed. The Coalition Against Domain Name Abuse (CADNA) is now urging a focus on policy improvement.

Top 10 trademark news stories for November

With the application window for new gTLDs due to open next month, it was perhaps unsurprising that the most-read story in November centred on last-ditch efforts to derail the online expansion. While gTLD-related stories dominated the most-read stories on WTR, anti-counterfeiting efforts in China and Quebec’s French language visibility campaign rounded out the top five.

Fight to stop gTLDs will extend beyond the application window

Last week almost 90 business associations and companies joined forces with the Association of National Advertisers to form the Coalition for Responsible Internet Domain Oversight and oppose the rollout of the gTLD programme. While some commentators have argued that the call has come too late, the ANA’s general counsel has told <i>WTR</i> that the fight will continue beyond the application window if necessary.
